Where Is This Fear Coming From?

Fear comes from not knowing what the outcome will be. You think the worst will happen. When you are confident, you have no fear because you know what to expect. Many times, people do not try different things because they are afraid too.  Quiet as it’s kept, most of us experience fear in some form or another.  We fear that new job will be the wrong choice. We even fear speaking in front of people because our words will come out wrong.  We fear starting that new business, what if we fail.  Lastly, we also fear how we look to others (our hair, our bodies), just to name a few.  Fear should not paralyze us from trying different things or accepting who we are in life.  Do we just let fear take over our lives?  No, that’s not what we’re going to do.  Let’s find out how to beat this spirit of fear.

What is fear?

2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) states “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and a sound mind”.  So, I decided to look up the word “fear” on Google Search.    It said fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.  I also went to http://www.nativeremedies.com and they wrote: “Emotions play an important part in our daily lives.  Fear is one such emotion that is preprogrammed into all animal and people as an instinctual response to potential danger.”  Lastly, http://dosomethingcool.net  describes fear as “an emotion that tells you to avoid or escape from an unwanted situation.”  Okay, so now we know that fear is an emotion.  Where do these emotions come from?  I believe our emotions come from our thoughts.  Some types of emotions are when we feel sad, hurt, happy, joyful, fearful, anger and depressed.  We choose what emotions will or will not take over our bodies.  It is up to us to accept or deny good or bad emotions.   You often hear people say “He made me mad”, but it was you who decided to let that emotion rise by your belief.  Emotions get power to rise from your beliefs.  So now we know fear is an emotion that only rises when we give it power from our beliefs.

There are different types of fears.

While continuing my research on fear with http://dosomethinggood.net, they mention 3 types of fears.  External fear, internal fear, and subconscious fear, we will look further into these types.

External fears:  This type of fear is caused by events that happened in your past and your afraid for it to happen again.  For example: When I was a little girl, 6 or 7 years old, I was in a terrible car accident.  Because I use to lean my face on the car door window, I was hurt badly.  Now I am extra cautious when driving because I am afraid that I will get hurt badly like before.  Here’s another example, you went to the community swimming pool and a lifeguard had to save you from drowning; now you are afraid to get into the pool again.  These are examples of external fears.

Internal Fears:  These fears are triggered by fear of success, fear of rejection and fear of self-worth.  These fears are dangerous because they can stop you from your passions and/or hobbies in life.  It is very easy to believe this type of fear because it’s easy to just believe something is wrong with us.  For example:  I will not start that business because I might be successful and what would that mean?   

Another example:  My passion is singing, but I feel that people will reject my voice, so I just sing in the shower.   It’s the “What if” in our life that can cause internal fears and stop us from trying new things.

Like Joyce Meyers said: “The only way to get over fear, is to do the thing that fears you.”  For example, if singing in front of people brings on fear, then I must sing and sing again in front of people until it is no longer a fear.

God gave me a great singing voice. I will not be afraid!

Subconscious Fears:  They are also called limiting beliefs because they filter how you see your world.  DoSomethingGood.net gave us a good example of this fear.  “An example of a limiting belief would be if you think you’ll never find a job you like because every job you’ve ever had was terrible.  Limiting beliefs usually try to convince you that you’re not good enough to do something.”

What does God say about Living in Fear?

  1. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity (shyness), but of power, love, and self-discipline.   2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
  2. Such love has no fear because perfect love expels all fear.  If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this show that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.  1 John 4:18 NIV
  3. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.  I will strengthen you and help you.  I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.  Isaiah 41:10 NIV

God wants us to live a life according to His will.  He does not want us to be afraid of anything. He wants us to love and have a self-disciplined life.  God has a plan for our lives, and we have to get rid of the fear so that we can carry out His plan.  Like the song says, “We are soldiers in the army, we have to fight.”

How to Get Rid of Fear

How can I get rid of fear?

  • Pray and ask God to show you how to trust Him and His word about fear and faith.  Ask Him to help you with your unbelief.
  • As mentioned before, you must do the thing that fears you over and over until it no longer causes you to be afraid.
  • When God made you, He did not make a mistake.  You are just like He envisioned you.  Beautiful…
  • Research ways to have confidence in yourself and practice them.
  • Find the right affirmations on confidence, repeat them every day.  Look at yourself in the mirror while you say them.  Believe them when you say them.  It’s okay.  You are special.
  • Trust your decisions. If you make a bad decision, learn from it and keep it moving.
  • Get a good night sleep.  At least 7-8 hours.  Make it happen.  You are important.
  • Find ways to relax yourself.  Google it.
  • Do something nice for someone as often as possible.
  • Do not be a people pleaser, but please God only.
  • Love, Love, Love.   Be kind, confident and faithful to God.
  • Seek God for your assignment in this life.  When He reveals it to you, do it even if you’re afraid.  Do it!  It is your faith (belief and action) that pleases God.

 My final thoughts:

Be careful, fear will take over your life.  It will leave you in a state of disbelief, low self-esteem, and even anger.  You will only do what is necessary to make a living, that’s it.  You won’t want to do more or get more in your life.  We must always strive to live a life full of joy and happiness.  To do that, we must not be afraid to try different things.  When we find that thing that brings joy, we can then build on it until we are ready to try something new again.  We must look at fear as an enemy that enters our thoughts.  It is not in us to help us.  It is in us to bring us down and keep us in a bad space in our lives.  Remember fear is a spirit not from God.  For God is love, not fear.  Fear will not leave only when you say it with your mouth.  It will leave when you do that thing that brings you fear over and over.  Also, tell yourself that fear is not in you and believe what you have said.  The more you do these two things, the less fear will appear.  It’s about your belief and your actions.

Fear may show itself at any time, so we must always be aware of it when it comes.  Always ask the Holy Spirit to help you get over fear.  Sometimes fear is just too powerful.  We need the help of the Holy Spirit.  He is our helper.

Face all your fears now.  Get rid of them with a good attitude.  Don’t worry about what  people might say.  Don’t worry about “What if I fail or what if I succeed”.  What did God say?  Do what God said to do.  If fear arises, do it afraid, again and again.  It will go away.  I’m sure of it.  You don’t have anything to worry about.  God Bless You!
